“Manitoba families want their kids to have somewhere they can go to have some fun and get some exercise, and this pool is going to provide recreation opportunities for everyone in Thompson and this region of the north,” said Premier Kinew in a news release. He emphasized the importance of such community facilities in the northern part of the province, highlighting the government’s commitment to ensuring that projects like the Thompson pool are completed.

The Manitoba government is contributing $5 million toward the project, which brings their total investment to $10 million.

“Our government is making sure that Thompson and other northern communities have a partner that will be with you every step of the way to get important projects like the Thompson pool built,” said Minister Bushie. He underscored that this investment is about more than just constructing a pool — it’s a commitment to the health and well-being of the region’s residents.

The new facility will feature two tank pools — a six-lane pool and another pool with a shallow beach entry — and a splash pad. Additionally, the facility will include a sauna and a space for small gatherings. The design is intended to meet current recreational needs and accommodate future growth in the area.

Mayor Colleen Smook of Thompson expressed her excitement, noting the collaborative effort between the federal, provincial, and municipal governments. She emphasized that the facility will provide 55,000 people in Thompson and the surrounding area with a modern, accessible place for recreation, exercise, and year-round enjoyment.

The Thompson Community Pool will replace the Norplex Pool, which closed in 2019. The new aquatic centre promises to offer a safe and enjoyable way for residents across northern Manitoba to stay active, particularly during the winter months.
