Nurse adviser joins premier on listening tour

Premier Wab Kinew’s new adviser on nursing culture and safety joined him Monday in Thompson to hear from hospital staff as part of a provincewide listening tour.

It was the first time NDP MLA Carla Compton joined the premier and health minister to get an earful from front-line workers on how to fix the struggling health-care system.

Compton, a nurse, won the Tuxedo byelection in June to replace former premier Heather Stefanson, who resigned her seat in May.

Thompson General Hospital has faced major challenges in recent years, including shortages of both staff and hot water, Kinew noted in a news release.

Stops to date on the listening tour have included Grace Hospital, St. Boniface Hospital, Selkirk Mental Health Centre, Victoria Hospital, Health Sciences Centre and Brandon Regional Health Centre. Bethesda Regional Health Centre in Steinbach will be added to the list in the coming months, the release said.
