“It is important to set a good leadership example right from the start,” Khan said as he officially entered the PC leadership race. “Too often in politics, self-interest is placed ahead of public interest. Setting the right example, whether for my son or during a bid to become leader, is an important part of who I am.”

Khan notified interim leader Wayne Ewasko — who has been in the role since former leader Heather Stefanson left the position in January — of his decision and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in the critic roles.

“I look forward to focusing on my leadership bid that’s all about making Manitoba better,” Khan added.

The Tories didn’t immediately announce who would be taking over the roles vacated by Khan.

The Tory leadership race officially opened in June, Khan is the first candidate to officially enter the contest and the entry deadline is Oct. 15.

Others names that have been mentioned as potential Tory leadership hopefuls include Winnipeg Sun President and CEO and former Kirkfield Park MLA Kevin Klein, Conservative MP Candice Bergen and East St. Paul Mayor Carla Devlin.
