Winnipeg police and fire crews are on scene at a Winnipeg Walmart on Thursday morning after a man who was kicked out of the store returned and tried to set fire to it.

Witnesses say that the man was at the front of the store on the corner of Lakewood Boulevard and Fermor Avenue trying to steal items when security confronted him. He began to scream at security and as he was removed and threatened that he would return to burn the store down.

The witnesses say that approximately 10 minutes later that’s exactly what the man attempted to do. They say the suspect lit a display on fire and the front of the store quickly filled with smoke.

Staff evacuated the store and police and fire arrived quickly.

Witnesses were not sure if the man had been arrested or fled the scene.
