Province to announce initiative to tackle violent crime and retail theft

Manitoba will announce a new initiative to combat the growing problem of retail theft and violent crime in the province.

Premier Wab Kinew, Justice Minister Matt Wiebe and Mayor Scott Gillingham will make an announcement at noon Thursday.

This announcement comes following several high-profile incidents in Winnipeg, including a machete attack that left a 15-year-old with life-altering injuries, and a 7-Eleven store hit by thieves six times in one day.

CTV News Winnipeg also reported that 7-Eleven plans to close 10 stores in Winnipeg due to crime and theft concerns.

This is a developing story. More details to come.
