1 dead, 3 sent to hospital after crash on Portage Avenue in Winnipeg

One person is dead and three are in hospital — two in unstable condition and one stable — after a crash Friday morning that left a long path of damage and shut down a stretch of Portage Avenue.

A pickup truck hit a bus shelter and hydro pole near Portage and Bedson Street in west Winnipeg, before continuing across Bedson and hitting a Canadian Tire gas bar just after 7:30 a.m.

Police did not say if the person who died was in the pickup or somewhere else in the area.

A second damaged vehicle, a smaller SUV, could also be seen on Bedson, surrounded by yellow police tape.

Both directions of Portage were blocked between Cavalier Drive and David Street, with multiple emergency crews at the scene.

A damaged bus shelter can be seen in the background with a group of police officers to the right of the photo.
