2 Manitoba Youth Centre escapees back in custody, police say

Two 19-year-old inmates who escaped custody during an escorted trip in Winnipeg have been recaptured.

They had slipped away from correctional officers around 7:20 p.m. Monday and were re-arrested Tuesday evening, Winnipeg police said in a news release.

No information was provided on where they were located.

Both men are serving sentences at the Manitoba Youth Centre and were participating in a community program in Winnipeg’s North End when they escaped, the news release said.

The recapture was a co-ordinated effort between the Winnipeg Police Service’s major crimes unit, general patrol and community support units, and the Manitoba integrated violent offender unit, the release said.

The men were considered armed and dangerous but were arrested without incident, police said.

A previous version of this story included the names and photographs of the men. Those have been removed to protect their identity as they are serving youth sentences.
