A 14-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl have been charged following a homicide in Easterville, Man., over the weekend.
Mounties at the RCMP’s Chemawawin Cree Nation detachment responded to a report of a disturbance at a home at 1:45 a.m. in Easterville, about 125 kilometres southeast of The Pas, on Saturday.
The officers found the 32-year-old woman in critical condition. EMS provided medical care, but the victim died at the scene.
RCMP said the second victim, a 35-year-old female, was located a short distance away from the residence with non-life-threatening injuries. She was transported to a hospital in Winnipeg and remains in stable condition.
On Sunday, RCMP charged both female youths with second-degree murder and attempted murder in connection to the 32-year-old’s death, according to a Monday news release. They are also both charged with attempted murder in connection to the injured 35-year-old.
Chemawawin Cree Nation Chief Clarence Easter said on Sunday the news has been devastating for the community.
“It’s a very tragic event,” he said. “It’s very sad for the community.”
Both youth were remanded into custody before being charged.
Chemawawin RCMP, along with RCMP Major Crimes Services and Forensic Identification Services, continue to investigate.
