Eight people were rescued from a burning townhouse in Winnipeg’s Tyndall Park area on Wednesday morning, two were sent to hospital.
Emergency crews were called to the fire around 3:30 a.m. and found it “fully involved from top to bottom,” said district fire chief Kevin Hay.
Keewatin Street was shut down in both directions between Tyndall and Burrows avenues, and remained closed as of 6:30 a.m.
The fire started in the top suite of the two-storey townhouse and spread into the bottom one. The two people sent to hospital were from the top suite, said Hay, who did not have any information on their condition.
The front of the townhouse is lined by tall trees along the public sidewalk, which made for an added challenge in fighting the fire, he added.
“We had to set up our aerial ladder that had to go in between the trees to put some guys on the roof, but they did a good job.”
The fire department is investigating the cause with its canine unit, a dog trained in detecting accelerants possibly used to ignite or spread a fire, Hay said.
