A 12-year-old girl helping her family clean the beach near their Lake Winnipeg cottage on the weekend found a sawed-off shotgun.

The girl found the weapon on the beach near North Lake Street and Vaughan Avenue in Gimli,  around 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

The family immediately called police, RCMP said in a news release Tuesday.

The shotgun was rusted shut, so it was disassembled at the RCMP detachment, where police ascertained it wasn’t loaded.

The Mounties continue to investigate to determine where the gun came from and whether it’s connected to any crimes.

Gimli is a town of less than 2,500 permanent residents about 85 kilometres north of Winnipeg on the western shore of Lake Winnipeg. It’s a popular destination in summer, when the population swells with visitors and cottage-goers.
