‘He loved this city’: Longtime former Winnipeg councillor Jae Eadie dies at 76

A former Winnipeg councillor who served the city for more than two decades has died.

Jae Eadie, who worked as the councillor for the former Deer Lodge ward from 1980 to 1992, then as councillor for the St. James ward from 1992 to 2006, passed away Monday morning, his wife Rhoda Eadie told CBC News on Tuesday.

“He loved this city and was very proud of his 26 years at city hall,” Rhoda said.

Eadie, who had been battling esophageal and colon cancer for about three years, underwent surgeries and chemotherapy, but the cancer came back, Rhoda said. He was preparing to have another surgery and resume chemo treatment when he suffered a stroke last Wednesday.

Eadie, who served as speaker for city council in 2006, lost his St. James seat to Scott Fielding that same year.

In 1997, Eadie served as president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

Rhoda said he made a lot of friends over the years.

“He would hold Zoom meetings with other former FCM members to keep in touch,” she said.

He was also an avid cook and gardener — and was especially fond of lilies.

He and Rhoda had one daughter, Donna.
