Man charged in 2023 killing mistakenly released from Manitoba jail

A 27-year-old man who was charged in the death of another man last spring was accidentally released from provincial jail Tuesday, police said in a Wednesday news release.

Police say their major crimes unit is seeking public assistance in locating Mark Phillip Traverse.

Traverse was charged with manslaughter in the death of Leo Charles Martin-Shea, who had been beaten on the east side of Main Street at Stella Avenue on April 8, 2023. Martin-Shea died 11 days later in hospital, according to a previous news release

Traverse is described as being six feet one inch tall and 183 pounds, with a medium build. He has short brown hair, and brown eyes.

Police say Traverse is not considered armed and dangerous and is not a threat to public safety, but should not be approached. He is believed to be in Winnipeg or surrounding areas.

Anyone who may have been in contact with Traverse or know of his whereabouts are asked to call 204-986-6219, the anonymous Crime Stoppers line 204-786-TIPS, or email winnipegcrimestoppers.org.
