Man dies after SUV is hit by flying wheel from another vehicle on Highway 1 east of Winnipeg

A 59-year-old man is dead after the wheel of a car traveling in the lane beside him flew from the vehicle and hit his SUV, according to a Wednesday news release by St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP.

Police say they received a report of a crash on Highway 1 and Provincial Road 206, around 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

The release says both vehicles were heading east on Highway 1 at the time of the collision, with the SUV in the south lane and the car in the north lane.

Police say the driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, a 45 year-old man, was brought to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The car stopped on the highway and immediately burst into flames after its wheel, control arm and other parts flew off of the vehicle, RCMP say.

The news release said the car’s driver, a 25 year-old Calgary man, was able to escape the car and was brought to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to RCMP, a 28 year-old woman from Kenora, Ont., was driving her vehicle close behind the collision and hit one of the fallen car parts on the highway, making her vehicle unusable. The woman was brought to hospital with minor physical injuries.

A forensic collision reconstructionist is assisting RCMP with the investigation.
