Man mistakenly released from Manitoba jail found

A 27-year-old man charged with manslaughter who had been accidentally released from a Manitoba provincial jail has been found and arrested, Winnipeg police say.

Mark Phillip Traverse was found by the Manitoba Integrated Violent Offender Apprehension Unit around 5:30 p.m. in Gypsumville, a community in Manitoba’s Interlake about 240 kilometres north of Winnipeg, city police said in a news release Wednesday evening.

Police had issued a news release a few hours earlier asking for help in locating Traverse, after Manitoba Justice reported he had been released in error.

Traverse was charged with manslaughter in the death of Leo Charles Martin-Shea, who was beaten on Main Street in Winnipeg at on April 8, 2023. Martin-Shea died 11 days later in hospital, police previously said.

Traverse was not considered a threat to public safety, police said Wednesday afternoon, but they warned he shouldn’t be approached.

He was arrested without incident, police said.
