Manitoba police watchdog investigating after man suffers facial fracture during RCMP arrest

The province’s police watchdog is investigating the arrest of a man who was taken to hospital after an encounter with RCMP in Thompson.

On Thursday at about 12:30 p.m., Mounties went to a home on Ashbury Place in Thompson to arrest a man who was wanted on an outstanding warrant, according to the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba, which is mandated to investigate all serious incidents involving police in the province.

When officers got there, they found the man in a bathroom, the IIU said in a news release Friday. The man then assaulted an officer, and a “use-of-force encounter” occurred when trying to take the man into custody.

The man was then taken to Thompson General Hospital, where they learned he had a broken orbital bone, the IIU said.

Mounties told the IIU about what happened the following day. Witnesses or people with information on the incident are asked to call the IIU at 1-844-667-6060.

No other details will be provided at this time, the IIU said.
