Manslaughter charge laid in vehicle-pedestrian collision on Long Plain First Nation

A Long Plain First Nation man has been charged with manslaughter after his car hit a pedestrian who died while being transported to hospital, Manitoba RCMP say.

A Long Plain First Nation man has been charged with manslaughter after his car hit a pedestrian who died while being transported to hospital, Manitoba RCMP say.

Owen Smoke, 44, is in custody and also faces a charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death after the vehicle he was driving struck a man, 21, and pinned him underneath, the Mounties said in news release Tuesday.

Manitoba First Nations Police Service responded to the scene at about 1 a.m. Sunday. They were able to remove the victim from beneath the vehicle and place him in an amblunce, but he died on the way to the hospital, RCMP said.

RCMP major crime services began investigating the death as a homicide. They continue to investigate with the Manitoba First Nations Police Service.
