Winnipeg’s south Perimeter Highway is currently closed in all directions at St. Mary’s Road due to multi-vehicle crash, say police.
Emergency crews are on scene although it doesn’t appear there are any serious injuries, a police spokesperson said, noting up to eight vehicles are involved.
The first crash was first reported just after 7 p.m. and it was followed by a series of slower impacts due to “skating rink-type roads,” the spokesperson said.
Drivers are slowing up for the new roundabout in the area but sliding due to icy conditions. A rainy Monday, combined with below-freezing temperatures overnight, left much of the city covered in a slick layer of frost on Tuesday morning.
A number of tow trucks have responded to the scene, which is going to cause a significant traffic snarl, police said.
