RCMP looking for Thompson man, 36, after assault last month

Thompson RCMP have arrested one person and are looking for a second man after a serious assault in the northern Manitoba city last month.

The victim, a 34-year-old man, was dropped off at the Thompson General Hospital with serious injuries around 4 p.m. on April 25 by a person who at that point was unidentified, police previously said. They were later able to identify that person through tips from the public, according to an April 29 news release.

Police continued investigating, and on Thursday, they arrested a 28-year-old man from South Indian Lake in connection with the assault.

He has been charged with aggravated assault. He’s also charged with assault on a peace officer in connection with his arrest in Thompson.

Mounties have identified a second suspect, also from Thompson, and are still looking for him.

Kenneth Paynter, 36, is wanted on a charge of aggravated assault. He’s described as 5’11” tall and 256 pounds, with short black hair and brown eyes. His neck is completely covered with tattoos, police said in a Thursday news release.

Paynter is considered dangerous, RCMP said, and they are warning the public not to approach him if spotted.

Anyone who has information about this incident or about Paynter’s whereabouts is asked to call Thompson RCMP at 204-677-6909 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477, or leave a secure tip online at manitobacrimestoppers.com.
