RCMP notified Manitoba police watchdog of arrest, video shared on social media

Moose Lake RCMP say the Manitoba Independent Investigation Unit was notified after a Friday arrest in Mosakahiken Cree Nation, part of which was shared in a video on social media.

Moose Lake RCMP were called about a disturbance at a residence on Trader’s Lake Road, in the community located approximately 526 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg, on Friday shortly after 4:30 a.m, a news release said on Monday.

A property representative told RCMP that a man assaulted a woman and refused to leave the residence. RCMP entered the building and tried to arrest a 22-year-old man from The Pas accused in assaulting the woman, the release said.

The man resisted and became combative, RCMP said. Two RCMP officers used a stun gun and handcuffed the man, but he continued to resist officers as they tried to put him into a police vehicle, the release said.

The man fell to the ground before RCMP used a stung gun on him again, the release said, and a third RCMP officer was called to provide assistance at the scene.

When the third officer arrived, RCMP were able to get the accused inside the police vehicle, the release said.

RCMP said the man is facing charges of two counts of resisting arrest, four counts of assault causing bodily harm, assault while choking and two counts of assault on a police officer.

The man was taken into police custody. No injuries were reported by the accused or two officers, the release said.

The Manitoba RCMP said they are aware of a video circulating online that shows a small portion of the arrest. The Manitoba Independent Investigation Unit has been notified of the incident, RCMP said.
