Parts of southern Manitoba are under severe thunderstorm warnings from Environment and Climate Change Canada on Sunday afternoon.
The following areas are under the warnings, which were issued after 1 p.m. Sunday:
- Duck Mountain Provincial Park and Provincial Forest.
- Jackhead Reserve.
- Little Grand Rapids and Atikaki Provincial Park.
- Municipality of Clanwilliam-Erickson.
- Peguis First Nation and Fisher River Cree Nation.
- Rural municipality of Minto-Odanah, including Minnedosa and Moore Park.
A severe thunderstorm near Little Grand Rapids is moving southeast at 40 kilometres per hour, according to the warning. Another severe thunderstorm, 15 kilometres northwest of Fisher River, is moving southeast at 30 kilometres per hour.
Those two storms are capable of producing strong winds, heavy rain and hail that is up to the size of a toonie, ECCC says.
In western Manitoba, a severe thunderstorm about 10 kilometres west of Pine River is moving south at 20 kilometres per hour. ECCC says another storm located near Otter Lake in southwestern Manitoba is moving southward at 30 kilometres per hour.
Those two storms are capable of producing strong winds, heavy rain and hail that is up to the size of a nickel, ECCC says.
People should take immediate cover under threatening weather conditions, as severe thunderstorms can create tornadoes, the weather agency says.
Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when approaching or occurring thunderstorms are likely to create or are already creating either large hail, damaging winds and heavy rains.
