Significant flooding at high-rise apartment in downtown Winnipeg forces residents to evacuate

Residents at a downtown Winnipeg apartment complex are being evacuated this evening due to significant flooding.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service arrived at the 25-storey residential high-rise on 170 Hargrave St. shortly after 11:30 a.m., a spokesperson for the City of Winnipeg said in an email.

Crews found the flooded area and worked to close the impacted valve to stop water from flowing, but the building had already sustained “significant water damage.”

Power at one of the Holiday Towers has been shut off and the elevators are not working, the city said.

The WFPS is working with the Winnipeg police to evacuate the building and secure the site, including closing access between the skywalk and apartment complex.

The city’s emergency social services team is helping residents to arrange temporary housing accommodations while the Animal Services Agency is assisting with people’s pets.

Security officers will remain at the building throughout the night, the city said. It is unknown when how long it will take to restore services to the building and remediate the damages.

The management company WRE Development, which oversees the Holiday Towers, has not responded to CBC’s request for comment as of Monday evening.
