Skylar Park loses women’s Olympic taekwondo quarterfinal

The path to a potential Olympic medal for Canada’s Skylar Park could include the repechage round.

The Winnipeg athlete dropped a 2-0 quarterfinal decision to 17th-ranked Kim Yujin of South Korea in the women’s 57-kilogram class on Thursday at the Grand Palais in Paris.

Should Kim advance to the final, Park would fight in the repechage and have a chance for a bronze medal.

Park was eliminated in a quarterfinal three years ago at the Tokyo Olympics.

In the Round of 16 earlier Thursday, the 25-year-old Park defeated Dominika Hronova of the Czech Republic 2-0.

Park handily won the first round 6-2 and overcame a two-point deficit in the second round by a 4-3 score.

The Canadian is ranked third in the world in her division.
