Strong winds prompt ice pileup warning near parts of Lake Manitoba, Lake Winnipeg

The province warns that strong winds over the weekend run the risk of causing ice pileups along parts of Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg.

High winds are expected Saturday morning until Sunday morning, resulting in a risk of ice pileups along Lake Manitoba’s southern basin, shorelines to the west of Gimli, as well as Victoria Beach on the east side of Lake Winnipeg, the province said in a Friday news release.

North wind gusts up to 60 kilometres per hour could cause ice pileups at those locations, the province said, and property owners in those areas are advised to take precautions.

Last week, strong winds pushed ice right to some people’s doors, damaging lakefront properties on Twin Lakes Beach, in the Rural Municipality of St. Laurent, which is near the southeastern shores of Lake Manitoba.

A map of Manitoba’s lake wind effect forecast, which shows the affected areas, is available on the province’s website.
