Environment Canada has issued a tornado warning it says is a “dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation” for parts of southwestern Manitoba near the Saskatchewan border.

The affected areas are the municipalities of Russell-Binscarth (including Gambler First Nation) and the rural municipality of Ellice-Archie (including the communities of St. Lazare, McAuley and Manson).

As of 2:31 p.m., meteorologists with Environment Canada were tracking a thunderstorm that was producing a tornado.

Damaging winds, hail ranging in size from nickels to golf balls and locally intense rainfall are also possible, the weather agency said in an alert Wednesday afternoon.

The storm is located southwest of Binscarth, Man., and moving southeast at 20 km/h.

The tornado warning replaces a severe thunderstorm warning for the affected areas.
