When Lola Ominiyi moved to Winnipeg in the ’70s, there was nowhere for her to go get her hair done — or buy makeup that actually matched her skin tone. So she opened her own store and created a space where other Black Winnipeggers, many of them newcomers, could go to feel seen. Thirty-five years later, her store is part of a growing fleet of businesses that she says play an essential role in Winnipeg’s Black community.
