On May 14, 2024, at approximately 6:40 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a grocery store in the 900 block of Portage Avenue for the report of a commercial robbery with employees having been assaulted.

Attending Central Division General Patrol officers located three adult male employees (aged 19, 22, and 46), all suffering from upper-body injuries sustained from an assault. All three victims were transported to hospital and medically treated for various injuries. A male suspect fled the store before police arrived.

Through their investigation, officers learned the suspect had attended the store earlier in the day and had been escorted out of the premises following an unrelated incident. The suspect later returned to the store, where he produced brass knuckles and proceeded to assault the three victims in the upper body. The suspect fled on foot; however, he was located at the rear of the 1000 block of Selkirk Avenue and arrested without incident. The brass knuckles, which officers observed the suspect discard in a nearby yard, were recovered and seized as evidence.

A 17-year-old male from Winnipeg is facing the following charges:

  • Assault with a Weapon x 3
  • Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized

He was released on an Undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.
