On September 3, at approximately 5:40 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a surface parking lot in the area of Portage Avenue and Home Street for the report of an attempted carjacking at knifepoint.

Attending Central District General Patrol located a 45-year-old male driver of a vehicle who had sustained minor injuries resulting from an assault during a robbery. The adult male suspect fled on foot before the arrival of police; however, officers arrested him in the 800 block of Portage Avenue without incident. A large knife was seized from the suspect as evidence.

The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and learned that the victim was parked in his vehicle when the suspect approached and opened the driver-side door. The suspect produced a large knife and threatened to kill the victim while attempting to grab the vehicle keys. The suspect used a lit cigarette to assault the victim, resulting in a minor upper-body injury for which he did not require medical attention. The suspect fled empty-handed.

Shortly after that, the suspect, still armed with the knife, approached a 41-year-old male victim who was also sitting in his vehicle located in the same surface parking lot and demanded the vehicle keys. The suspect was unsuccessful in obtaining the vehicle’s keys and fled on foot before the arrival of police. The victim was uninjured in this incident.
