City issues vacate order of Portage Avenue apartment building due to unsafe condition

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg has issued an order to the property owner of 2440 Portage Ave. to immediately vacate the building under the Winnipeg Building By-law and the Emergency Management By-law due to its unsafe condition.

We were recently notified of a third-party engineering inspection of the building that uncovered severe deterioration of its structure in various locations, necessitating the vacate order.

The City is in contact with the property owner regarding requirements under this order, including:

It’s expected that further orders will be issued to the property owner with respect to the specific actions necessary to address the unsafe conditions.

City officials will be going door-to-door to advise tenants of the order and to ensure the building is vacated.

The City is establishing a reception centre to help residents who do not have other options to find temporary accommodations and connect them with available resources and supports.

The timeline for repairs, inspections, and re-occupancy are not yet known; however, it’s anticipated that it may take several months to address the identified structural issues.

Building tenants are advised to contact the property owner / building manager for more information.

City officials will also be going door-to-door advising residents in neighbouring properties along Assiniboine Avenue that they are on an evacuation watch, and to prepare to evacuate if and when the structural condition of the apartment building necessitates it.
