City of Winnipeg expands online options for permit customers

Winnipeg, MB – Today, the City of Winnipeg launched new features to Permits Online to make the permitting process easier and more convenient for our customers.

In this first phase of planned improvements to the Permits Online platform, homeowners and contractors can now apply for most residential building permits, including new home construction, home additions, renovations, solar installations, and demolitions (some restrictions apply).

“These improvements not only streamline the permit process and improve customer service, but they help get us closer to our goal of approving more housing more quickly,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham.

“In terms of customer service, this is a good step forward. Council is aware there is more to do with respect to permits, and we will continue to make moves until we get it right,” said Sherri Rollins, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Property and Development.

Customers can now save and return to partially completed permit applications within a 30-day period. This allows customers to save permit information as they go, and work through the process in a convenient timeframe that works for them. Customers can also now view a record of submitted documents.

“These initial enhancements will help improve our customers’ ability to apply for certain permits online,” said Hazel Borys, Director of the Planning, Property & Development Department. “This is one of a series of planned improvements to help modernize our Permits Online platform and build a truly comprehensive one-stop shop to help streamline the permit process.”

Using Permits Online, customers can also view the status of permits and applications, and make payments. Further, licensed contractors can renew their licences using the online platform.|

Improving Permits Online is part of a larger, ongoing process to improve the digitizing of building permit applications and expanding online applications, such as online appointments and self-service options, aimed at speeding up the rate of development in Winnipeg.
