City promoting sustainability with spring curbside giveaway weekend, compost giveaway

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg is inviting residents to think sustainably this spring, by taking advantage of our annual compost giveaway, and by finding a new home for reusable, unwanted items during the Spring Giveaway Weekend. Residents are also reminded of the start of the yard waste collection program this May.

Spring curbside giveaway weekend
This year, the spring curbside giveaway weekend is happening May 11 and 12. It’s a great opportunity to find a new owner for those reusable, unwanted items taking up space in your home, or to browse the curbs for some great finds.

Simply place reusable, unwanted household items at the curb on your front street, label those items with a FREE sticker or sign and remove leftover items from the curb by dusk on Sunday.

Be sure to store items that you don’t want to give away out of sight and please do not put out:

  • Items that could be unsafe
  • Items infested with bed bugs (e.g., mattresses, furniture, and bedding)
  • Toilets (with a flush volume of 13 litres or more)

For more information, including suggested items, giveaway weekend etiquette, and what to do with leftover items, see: winnipeg.ca/giveawayweekend.

Annual compost giveaway
The grass clippings, leaves, and twigs that residents have hauled to the curb as part of our yard waste collection program have been turned into compost ready for your garden and we are giving it away for free May 10 to 12 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. while quantities last at the following locations:

This event is open to Winnipeg residents only. Residents must bring their own containers, shovels, and gloves. There is a limit of 100 litres of compost per vehicle (approximately five 19-litre/five-gallon pails) and no trailers are allowed. Only one vehicle will be allowed per compost pile at a time.

For more information, see: winnipeg.ca/compostgiveaway.

Yard waste collection program
This year’s curbside yard waste collection program will begin the week of April 29 for homes in yard waste collection area “A” and the week of May 6 for homes in yard waste collection area “B”. Residents can also drop off yard waste for free our 4R Winnipeg Depots.

Yard waste is collected at the curb once every two weeks, on the same collection day as recycling and garbage, and will continue until November (weather permitting).

Residents can find out their yard waste collection days by:

Residents can put their yard waste in:

  • Any reusable container without a lid (e.g., plastic tubs, old blue boxes, old metal or plastic garbage containers), containers should not be broken or damaged
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Paper yard waste bags (available at many stores)

Yard waste in plastic bags will not be accepted because the plastic bags do not decompose and will ruin the finished compost.

We urge you not to rake any yard waste material or debris onto the street as this can plug the street drains. This can cause ponding problems as well as increase the risk of basement flooding.

Please place your yard waste containers at least an arm’s length away from your recycling and garbage carts. It is also recommended that yard waste be put out for collection no sooner than the evening before your scheduled collection day.

Residents are reminded to never burn yard waste or any other waste as it affects air quality and can lead to a fire. Please do not store collected yard waste and other waste items up against your home, fence, garage or shed, as this can be an easy target for opportunistic arson.

Please put your carts and/or yard waste out before 7 a.m. on your designated day, as waste that sits out for an extended period can be a target for arson. If you have large waste items like mattresses, furniture, or appliances, schedule a pickup online or contact 311.
