Construction on new spray pad at Bronx Park Community Centre underway

Winnipeg, MB – Today, the governments of Canada and Manitoba, along with the City of Winnipeg, broke ground on a new project at Bronx Park Community Centre (720 Henderson Hwy.), which will include an accessible spray pad and other park improvements.

“Recreational spaces are at the heart of communities, where people can come together and stay active,” said Kevin Lamoureux, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg North, on behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities. “We are proud to celebrate the ground breaking of the new spray pad at the Bronx Park Community Centre, which will provide summer memories for many families for years to come.”

“The Province of Manitoba is excited to partner on community projects like the Bronx Park Community Centre spray pad,” said Lisa Naylor, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “Creating recreational infrastructure in local neighbourhoods encourages fun community activities and improves the quality of life for families.”

“These spray pads are an important part of the City of Winnipeg’s Economic Response and Recovery Plan, which, with support from the Province of Manitoba and the Government of Canada, is supporting the wellbeing and development of residents, ensuring equitable access to safe and enjoyable recreational opportunities for communities,” said Evan Duncan, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Community Services. “The new spray pad at Bronx Park Community Centre will benefit families in Elmwood – East Kildonan and North Kildonan for years to come, and I look forward to seeing it open.”

“Bronx Park Community Centre is a hub of activity in this area of the city,” said Jeff Browaty, Councillor for North Kildonan. “We’re excited to start construction on this important new recreational amenity that will bring relief from the heat, and create countless memories for families in Elmwood – East Kildonan and North Kildonan. I’m also grateful to the Government of Canada and the Province of Manitoba for their support in making this project a reality.”

“Bronx Park Community Centre is unique in that its catchment area serves both Elmwood – East Kildonan and North Kildonan,” said Jason Schreyer, Councillor for Elmwood – East Kildonan. “I’m pleased to be able to partner with Councillor Jeff Browaty, along with the Government of Canada and the Province of Manitoba, to bring this incredible new spray pad to the centre. We can’t wait to invite families here to enjoy it starting next summer.”

“We are more than excited to see the addition of a spray pad at the Bronx Park Community Centre,” said Evan Comstock, President, Bronx Park Community Centre. “We anticipate more families visiting us and enjoying the wide range of services our facility offers. Thank you to everyone involved for prioritizing this project while including our community centre board and staff each step of the way. We wish all the best to the workers who have taken on this complex project and we are looking forward to seeing the completed spray pad.”

In addition to a new accessible spray pad, the project includes concrete pathways, seating areas (including benches and picnic tables), shade structures, a water fountain, a bike rack, and upgraded landscaping. The spray pad is anticipated to open to the public in summer 2025.

Council approved funding for the project through the COVID-19 Economic Response and Recovery Plan, which focuses on enhancing active transportation, improving regional park infrastructure, and adding accessible recreational amenities in underserved areas of the city. The budget for the project is estimated at approximately $1 million, with $913,000 funded through the federal Canada Community-Building Fund and $87,000 from the City of Winnipeg.
