Construction season now underway

Winnipeg, MB – The yearly hum of jackhammers and excavators is upon us and improved roads and pathways are on the horizon.

Our annual road construction season is officially underway, with $138.3 million budgeted for improvements to local and regional streets in 2024. A number of these projects include active transportation improvements. An additional $7.2 million is dedicated solely to new active transportation infrastructure.

Work will be done on nearly 150 lane kilometres of road, bridge and active transportation infrastructure over the coming months.

Nearly all scheduled projects have been tendered and either have already started or will start very shortly.

“These projects address the current needs of our growing city and lay the groundwork for future development and connectivity,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “I thank residents for their patience and cooperation during construction season. Together, we’re paving the way for a smoother, safer, and more sustainable Winnipeg.”

In 2024, we will continue much-anticipated rehabilitation work on the St. Vital Bridge and start rehabilitating the Pembina Highway Bridges over the La Salle River. We will begin construction of a new bridge on Creek Bend Road over the Seine River and continue repairs on the Main/Norwood bridges.

The Regional and Local Street Renewal program includes work on the following major routes:

  • Inkster Boulevard – Sheppard Street to Main Street – two-year, $16.77-million project
  • Abinojii Mikanah – St. Anne’s Road to River Road – two-year, $12.7-million project
  • Grant Avenue / Taylor Avenue – various segments – one-year, $5.845-million project
  • McGregor Street / Partridge Avenue – various segments – one-year, $10.48-million project
  • Dugald Road / Plessis Road – various segments – two-year, $16.87-million project

This year will also see an influx of active transportation infrastructure constructed around the city. These improvements include:

  • New separated bike lanes on:
    • Panet Road (Talbot Avenue to Reenders Drive)
    • Day Street (Pandora Avenue to Ravelston Avenue West)
  • Extensions of existing multiuse paths on:
    • Keewatin Street (Burrows Avenue to Gallagher Avenue)
    • Taylor Avenue (Lindsay Street to Joe Malone Park)
  • New neighbourhood greenways on:
  • Egerton Road (between Morier Avenue and the southern terminus)
  • Alexander Avenue (Arlington Street to Princess Street)
  • Youville Street (Marion Street to Haig Avenue)
  • Ruby Street / Banning Street (Palmerston Avenue to Notre Dame Avenue)

Full lists of road, bridge, and active transportation projects are outlined in the multi-year Capital Budget.

As construction picks up, we encourage drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike to check our lane closures app and plan ahead for any required detours. Residents can also download and use Waze to find the fastest route.

Waze is a free, real-time traffic and navigation app that shares traffic information from the City’s Transportation Management Centre (TMC) as well as tips submitted by other drivers.
