Winnipeg, MB – Today, the Government of Canada and the City of Winnipeg announced the opening of a new 3,000-square-foot accessible spray pad, playground, and other park features at Corydon Community Centre – Crescentwood Site (1170 Corydon Ave.).
“Today’s ribbon cutting ceremony marks a new chapter for the Corydon Community Centre with the opening of the new spray pad and playground,” said Ben Carr, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South Centre, on behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities. “With increased accessibility, this is sure to be a lively and inclusive space, fostering community gatherings and cherished memories for years to come.”
“The Economic Response and Recovery Plan was approved by Council with funding from the Province of Manitoba and the Government of Canada to support Winnipeg’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Evan Duncan, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Community Services. “It’s exciting to see these investments now come online, providing residents with enhanced and accessible recreation opportunities.”
“With summer weather finally here, I’m thrilled to be able to invite families to enjoy the new accessible spray pad and playground at Corydon Community Centre,” said John Orlikow, Councillor for River Heights – Fort Garry. “These beautiful new amenities are a testament to all levels of government working together, and will be an important part our community for years to come.”
In addition to a new accessible spray pad and playground, the project included concrete pathways and seating areas, fencing, benches, picnic tables, a bike rack, and upgraded landscaping.
Council approved funding for the project through the COVID-19 Economic Response and Recovery Plan, which focuses on enhancing active transportation, improving regional park infrastructure, and adding accessible recreational amenities in underserved areas of the city. The budget for the project was $1.47 million, with $845,000 of the project budget funded through the federal Canada Community-Building Fund, $300,000 from the provincial Building Sustainable Communities Program, and $328,282 from the City of Winnipeg.
