On June 11, 2024, at approximately 5:20 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service received a 911 call about a male attempting to set fire to the fuel tank of the caller’s vehicle in the 800 block of Arlington Street. No fire was effectively started.

The male then armed himself with a knife and a rock and began running into traffic confronting people and yelling.

At approximately 5:23 p.m., General Patrol officers arrived on scene and encountered the male who was still armed in the street. As police approached the male, a use-of-force encounter took place. A Conducted Energy Weapon (Taser) was deployed but to no avail and a firearm was discharged striking the male.

Officers immediately attended to the male, providing emergency medical care and requested an ambulance.

He was transported to hospital in unstable condition and has since been upgraded to stable condition.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has been notified and will assume responsibility for the investigation. Any follow-up inquiries can be directed to the attention of the IIU.
