On Wednesday, September 4, at approximately noon, the Winnipeg Police Service assigned resources to restrict traffic at the intersection of Portage Avenue and Main Street for the safety of the public based on a planned protest at this location.
As a form of de-escalation and at the request of organizers, resources were strategically placed out of view, in proximity to Portage Avenue and Main Street. Vehicle access to the intersection was limited, and motorists who reached the location turned away when they observed the protest.
At approximately 12:23 p.m., a motorist entered the intersection, where he had an altercation with several of the protesters, including a cyclist.
Members of the Police Liaison Team spoke with the cyclist, who declined medical attention and further police involvement. All other protesters involved in this matter left prior to police arrival. The driver of the involved vehicle remained at the scene.
The Winnipeg Police Service continues investigating the incident. No arrests have been made.
