Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Higgins Avenue and Notre Dame Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two overnight fires on Higgins Avenue and Notre Dame Avenue.

Higgins Avenue fire

At 11:28 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, WFPS crews responded to reports of fire at a two-storey commercial building in the first 100 block of Higgins Avenue.

Upon arrival to the scene, firefighters were met with smoke and flames. They launched an offensive attack, using hose lines to put the fire out. It was declared under control at 12:06 a.m.

Crews completed a search of the building and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time.

Notre Dame Avenue fire

At 12:52 a.m. Sunday, May 26, WFPS crews responded to reports of fire at a two-storey converted residential dwelling in the 100 block of Notre Dame Avenue.

Smoke was coming from the structure when crews arrived on scene. They used hose lines to apply water to the fire and brought it under control at 1:57 a.m.

Residents were alerted by smoke alarms and evacuated the building. One person was assessed by paramedics, but not transported to hospital. No other injuries were reported.

Damage estimates are not available. Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by an electrical malfunction.
