Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Young Street and Ellice Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two structure fires last night.

Young Street fire

At 7:42 p.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2024, the WFPS responded to a fire in a single-family bungalow in the 400 block of Young Street. A fire crew that was driving past the building noticed heavy smoke and flames coming from the house and reported the fire.

When additional crews arrived, they launched a fire attack from the exterior of the building. Once the flames were knocked down, crews were able to transition to an interior fire attack. The fire was declared under control at 8:13 p.m.

All occupants of the building safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported. During a search of the building, firefighters located a deceased cat.

The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time.

Ellice Avenue fire

At 1:39 a.m. on Sunday, July 14, 2024, WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey apartment building.

Upon arrival on scene, crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. Crews fought the fire from the interior of the building. The fire was declared under control at 2:27 a.m.

All occupants of the building safely self-evacuated. No injuries were reported. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team was deployed to assist displaced residents find temporary accommodations.

The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
