Winnipeg Public Library announces its next Makers-in-Residence

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Public Library is pleased to announce that Tracy Charette Fehr and Janet Murata have been selected as the newest Makers-in-Residence at the Library.

Tracy Charette Fehr is an interdisciplinary artist of Métis/Settler origins with a passion for story, family, and history. Her accomplished work is in textiles, embroidery, clay, paint, beading, and quillwork, with a special interest in Indigenous arts. A mentor with over 20 years of experience, Tracy is passionate about storytelling — personal and cultural — and introducing others to ways to express and depict their own experiences.

“I enjoy introducing participants to ways of exploring their artistic and creative potential,” said Fehr. “As both a professional artist and therapeutic arts practitioner, I am deeply committed to helping people of all ages discover the healing potential of art-making.”

Janet Murata is a Japanese-Canadian professional calligrapher and small business owner with many commissioned works. She is highly skilled in origami and watercolour, with interests in sustainable sewing and upcycling natural fibres. She has mentored hundreds of people one-on-one and in workshops.

“My passion is to share my knowledge and inspire others to explore their creativity,” said Murata. “My artistic endeavours are primarily (and intentionally!) analog in paper, pen, brush, needle, and thread. Creating art does not require fancy tools or a special location.”

The Maker-in-Residence program operates out of the ideaMILL at Millennium Library and will run from October 1 – December 21, 2024. Throughout the program, each maker will offer weekly drop-in studio time where they will invite visitors into their creative processes with activities to try new skills. They will also offer workshops in library branches to teach new skills, including programs for children and teens.
