18-year-old in custody after swinging machete in park filled with children

An 18-year-old man is in custody after allegedly swinging a machete around in a park that was filled with children.

The incident happened on Friday at around 7:30 p.m. at a green space near Ross Avenue and Sherbrook Street.

Winnipeg police say they received a report of a man swinging round a machete in the air, and then approaching a large group of children who were playing in the area.

When officers arrived they found a 12-year-old victim who had not been injured. They directed police to the 600 block Pacific Avenue where officers located the suspect and a machete.

An 18-year-old man was arrested and faces a charge of assault with a weapon.

He remains in custody.
