All aboard! Winnipeg brings back waterbus

Running again for the first time in six years the Winnipeg water bus service is being offered once again starting August-long weekend.

Winnipeggers living in the cities central neighbourhood will have another option for transportation along the Red and Assiniboine rivers.

“These rivers have been thoroughfares for thousands of years, shaping our city’s history and culture along their banks,” says Sara Stasiuk, Chief Executive Officer, The Forks North Portage in a news release. “The water bus connects us to these rivers and is a unique transportation option for the community.”

To make it convenient, the water bus will operate similarly to transit buses, offering a hop-on and hop-off option. To keep up with potential demand, it’ll run roughly every 15 minutes.

“When we launched Winnipeg Waterways earlier this year one of our main goals was to bring the water bus back,” says Will Welford, Co-Owner, Winnipeg Waterways. “We see this service as an integral transportation option for our city.”

People interested in taking the water bus have the option of paying a one-time fare of $6 using their credit card, or they can purchase a monthly pass for $200.

Starting Sunday, August 4, the water bus will sail the rivers on weekdays from 8 am – 10 am and every day from 3:30 pm – 9:30 pm.

The stops the water bus will make include the docks at The Forks, Hugo, Norwood, Stephen Juba Park, The Manitoba Legislature, The Assiniboine River Walk at the Midtown Bridge, and the Esplanade Riel.
