Cooking fire leads to evacuation of 14-storey apartment complex in Sturgeon Creek

No one was injured following an apartment fire Wednesday evening that forced numerous people out of their suites.

The blaze broke out just before 8 p.m. in a 14-storey apartment building in the 3000 block of Portage Avenue.

When firefighters entered the complex, they found smoke coming from one of the suites. Using handlines, they were able to get the fire under control within 20 minutes.

Some residents evacuated from the building, while others sheltered in place. No injuries were reported.

Fire officials say that most of the damage was contained to the affected suite.

It’s believed the fire was accidental, caused by unattended cooking.

The investigation continues.
