Counterweight on rail bridge at The Forks to be removed

The iconic counterweight that sits atop the rail bridge at The Forks is being removed.

The Forks announced on Tuesday that it is the first step in a long-term bridge repair project.

“This work will help determine the next phases of necessary work,” said The Forks in a press release.

The popular bridge, which was used as a pedestrian bridge to get across the Assiniboine River from the Forks to Main Street, has been closed since June 2023.

At this point, there is no official timeline for reopening. However, The Forks is prioritizing getting the bridge reopened as it is an important connector to Niizhoziibean, a pivotal and historical piece of The Forks.

During the construction, visitors are encouraged to avoid the area and choose an alternate route.

The Forks is now working alongside Mike Valcourt, to recreate the mural on the counterweight. The new piece will be hung in The Forks Market.
