Back to school will look a little different for kids in one northern Manitoba city after a school in their community went up in flames early Wednesday morning.
The fire broke out shortly after 3 a.m. in Westwood School, a Kindergarten to Grade 8 school in Thompson, Man.
Large flames and black plumes of smoke filled the sky as the school burned through the day.
The Thompson Fire Department and Vale Manitoba Operations Mine Rescue Firefighters worked tirelessly to get the fire under control.
It’s believed no one was in the building at the time of the fire.
The School District of Mystery Lake says the fire will impact the September start-up. However, they say they require time to plan, and details will be released in the future.
The cause of the fire has not been determined
Thompson RCMP and the Office of the Fire Commissioner continue to investigate.
