Southern Manitoba is being issued an extreme heat warning that may last for the next few days.
“We’ll be issuing extreme heat warnings for southern Manitoba this afternoon,” says Kyle Ziolkowski, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.
EC measures extreme heat warnings by seeing the daytime highs being 32 degrees Celsius two days in a row with an overnight low greater than plus 16.
“Starting tomorrow temperatures are really going to climb as humidex values go up.”
On Thursday, the high in the day is 32 degrees with a humidex of 39.
“It does look like a fairly prolonged heat event. It’ll be sticking around for a better part of a week here. We may fall below the heat criteria by the end of the weekend but the temperatures are still going to remain hot into next week.”
EC encourages people who work outside to take precautions to avoid heat exhaustion or heat stroke. They say to drink plenty of fluids, take breaks, and find shade as much as possible.
Athletes who train outside should consider training inside if possible or do it in the early mornings or late evenings to avoid the extreme heat.
