Firefighters rescue dog from blaze Tuesday evening

A pair of fires kept Winnipeg fire crews busy Tuesday evening.

The first fire broke out around 6:40 p.m. in a six-storey apartment complex in the 0 to 100 block of Keewatin Street.

Smoke was coming from the building when crews arrived. The fire was located in the elevator mechanical room. Crews launched an offensive attack, and the fire was under control shortly after 7 p.m.

Some residents were temporarily evacuated from their suites, while others sheltered in place. No injuries were reported.

Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by a failure in an elevator motor.

Later in the evening, shortly after 9 p.m., a second fire broke out in a two-storey duplex in the 600 block of Manitoba Avenue.

Flames were pouring from the duplex when crews arrived. They were able to enter and fight the fire from inside. It took about an hour to get it under control.

All occupants of the building safely self-evacuated before crews arrived at the scene. No injuries were reported. Crews located and rescued a dog from one of the suites.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
