First portion of Nestawaya River Trail opens at The Forks

Lace up your skates. Ice rinks across the city have begun to reopen as temperatures drop, including the first section of the Nestaweya River Trail at The Forks.

On Tuesday, the Port Rink at The Forks opened up on the Assiniboine River.

This marks only the fifth time since 2008 that the trail opened in December, with the earliest opening coming in 2013, when the trail opened on Dec. 21.

The trail will typically reach over six kilometres when completed and on average is open for 50-plus days of the winter.

This year, the trail has been built thanks to the support of Winnipeggers who have “adopted” a metre of the trail through the Trail Together campaign in support of The Forks Foundation. Close to 700 metres have been adopted since the campaign started.

Additional sections of the Nestaweya River Trail will continue to open as nature allows.
