Families looking for outdoor fun will have several activities to choose from this weekend at Assiniboine Park.
“We have our We Are Winter events starting today and going Saturday and Sunday. It’s an outdoor event filled with free programming and a great opportunity for people to come down, try something new, spend time with friends and family and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the park,” said Georgia Sigurdson, communications coordinator at Assiniboine Park Conservancy.
Individuals will have the option to try out various winter activities such as skiing, skating, sledding, guided snowshoe tours, and ice bikes.
On Friday, Sigurdson said there will be an 80 skate and ski night. “We want everyone to come decked out in their 80s gear. We’re going to have live music at the duck pond and everyone can skate and have a great time.”
The family-friendly activities continue on Saturday with an outdoor movie. “On Saturday it’s our Frozen sing-along movie, so it’s going to be an outdoor movie with special characters Elsa and Anna there. We’re inviting family friends to come down, sit, and enjoy the movie outdoors as well. We also have a lot of winter equipment, which will be free this weekend from Winnipeg Trails.”
To help keep eventgoers warm, Sigurdson says there is a warm place for them to go. “Our duck pond shelters are heated. So that’s a great warm-up spot. We’re going to have fire pits around the area and then we’re going to have Park Cafe open all weekend as well, so people can definitely go in there warm up and grab a delicious bite to eat too.”
We Are Winter is at Riley Family Duck Pond on January 10 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., January 11 from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m., and January 12 from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m.
