Grand Chief Cathy Merrick of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs will lie in state at the Manitoba legislature following her sudden passing last week.
Premier Wab Kinew announced the honour during a news conference on Saturday, where Indigenous leaders paid tribute to Merrick’s legacy.
Merrick collapsed outside the Winnipeg Law Courts on Friday while speaking to reporters about two court cases. After feeling dizzy, she fell and, despite efforts by paramedics, she did not survive.
Kinew highlighted Merrick’s significant contributions, saying, “She moved the needle in the direction of righteousness, justice, and reconciliation,” and emphasized that all Manitobans should recognize her service to the province.
By allowing Merrick to lie in state, Kinew said it would give those unable to travel to Pimicikamak the chance to pay their respects in Winnipeg. Details on the arrangements will be announced soon.
Merrick made history in 2022 as the first woman elected Grand Chief of the Assembly.
She was a strong advocate for Indigenous issues, supporting the families of serial killer Jeremy Skibicki’s victims and calling for searches of a landfill where two of the women’s remains are believed to be. She also worked hard for child welfare reform and pushed for improved services in First Nation communities, including health care and transportation.
