Harvest Manitoba is warning Winnipeggers of a scam involving people posing as their organization.
“We have been informed that individuals are going door-to-door and claiming to collect food and money donations on behalf of Harvest Manitoba,” says the organization on Instagram. “Please be aware: we do not conduct any door-to-door solicitations. If someone approaches you for donations in our name, it is a scam.”
For 35 years Harvest Manitoba, formerly Winnipeg Harvest, has been collecting non-perishable food and giving it to people in need.
“To donate to us directly, please drop off food at Harvest Manitoba, and put non-perishables in one of our yellow bins located at the front of most grocery stores.”
At many major grocery stores across Winnipeg, at the exit doors Harvest Manitoba has set up big yellow bins. Anyone interested in helping people who cannot afford groceries can purchase and place non-perishable items in the bin on their way out of the store.
Harvest Manitoba has grown to be the 4th largest food distributor of its kind in Canada. They also recently started dropping off weekend food kits in different communities to make sure kids don’t come to school on Monday hungry.
