With temperatures dropping, the City of Winnipeg is reminding residents to take necessary precautions during extreme cold temperatures.
Some winter safety tips to keep in mind are as follows:
- Older adults and very young children should avoid prolonged outdoor exposure.
- Check on older friends, relatives, and neighbours who live alone.
- Recognize the symptoms of hypothermia: confusion, shivering, difficulty speaking, sleepiness, and stiff muscles. If these symptoms are present, seek immediate medical attention. Severe hypothermia can be life-threatening.
- Bring pets inside and limit the amount of time they spend outside.
If residents see someone who is in need of help due to the extreme cold, they are encouraged to call 9-1-1 immediately and report their condition and location. If possible, it is advised that they stay with the individual until emergency crews arrive.
When they are open, residents can warm up at one of the City facilities during extreme cold.
